What You Can Do With Nutrition To Prevent Breast Cancer

It’s October and that means the “Think Pink Movement” is in full swing to raise awareness about, and money for breast cancer.  Finding a cure for breast cancer seems to be the main focus, but what about the importance of preventing cancer? Who is educating the public on preventive care? Where is the message about taking all the necessary steps and recommendations to avoid getting cancer in the first place?

The human body is amazing. It is capable of healing itself in many ways and is amazingly equipped to fight cancer!  It’s hard to believe, but every day your body develops hundreds or even thousands of cancer cells.  Your body’s immune system seeks out these cancerous cells and destroys them.  THIS OCCURS WITHOUT A CONSCIOUS THOUGHT! However, when the immune system is compromised or the body is overloaded with toxins, carcinogens, or suffers from a poor diet and lack of exercise, the body is no longer able to keep up with the speed at which the cancer cells are dividing and growing.

Cancer typically develops and grows in the body for years or even decades before it is detected and diagnosed. Scary, isn’t it! That is why it is so important to make sure that everything that enters your body is PURE (not toxic), NATURAL, and NOURISHING. It’s easy to be fooled by today’s marketing machines. Labels that ride the edge of legality and are only required to list an ingredient if over a certain percentage, are everywhere! That’s why it is up to us to take control of our health and practice the preventive care.  That not only makes sense, but is purely reasonable and easy.

PART I – The Nutritional “Culprits”

The following are some examples of foods that are common in our diets and that help to promote cancerous cells. (And no, it will not say that on the label).

These foods CAUSE cancer:

Damaged or Compromised Fats:  Examples are Trans Fats, Hydrogenated Oils, Oils extracted unnaturally from their sources – Corn Oil, Vegetable Oil, Canola Oil, Peanut Oil. These damaged and compromised fats prevent your cells from functioning properly.  Each one of our cells has a lipid (fat) bilayer that acts as a gatekeeper. Damaged or compromised fats can prevent the “good” from getting into the cell and the “bad” from getting out (detoxifying).   Your cells do not distinguish between good and damaged fats and will use them just the same. As a result, the cells of your body essentially become hydrogenated.  Your cells are no longer able to function as they should. (1)

Processed Meats:    This includes Bacon, Lunchmeat, Hot Dogs, Packaged Meats, Sausage, and almost all frozen meats.  After 7,000 clinical studies, The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), found that eating processed meats is directly linked to cancer. According to the WCRF website, “There is strong evidence that processed meats are causes of Bowel Cancer, and that there is no amount of processed meat that can be confidently shown not to increase risk.” (2)  One of the main reasons processed meats are so dangerous is because they contain Sodium Nitrite.  Sodium Nitrite helps give meat a red color, to improve taste, and to prevent spoilage.  These Sodium Nitrites turn into Nitrosamines, known carcinogens, in the body. A 2005 University of Hawaii study found that processed meats increase the risk of Pancreatic Cancer by 67 percent.  That is a risk not worth taking.

Refined Sugars and Grains: Unfortunately, American’s love affair with sugar and processed grains comes with a heavy price. This problem is not just causing an obesity epidemic. Sugar is the main culprit in lifestyle related conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.  This has been widely known since the 1930’s when Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for discovering that sugar is the food and fuel for cancer.  His research showed that where normal cells use oxygen as fuel, cancer cells use sugar as a preferred fuel source.  In addition, sugar lowers the body’s pH .  Lower pH which is more acidic, is the perfect environment to invite and grow cancer.  In fact, cancer cells themselves are highly acidic.  Higher pH equates to higher oxygen, therefore healthier cells.  * An added note about weight gain. Women who have gained between 21 and 30 pounds since age 18, have a 40 percent increased risk of breast cancer compared with those who have put on five or fewer pounds, an American Cancer Society (ACS) study found. The price of our health has become higher and higher.

Acrylamides: These are dangerous by-products come from heating meats at high temperatures (frying or grilling), and are found in high levels in Potato Chips, French fries, and Cigarette Smoke.  According to the National Cancer Institute, “A series of case-control studies have investigated the relationship between dietary intake of acrylamide and the risk of developing cancers of the Oral Cavity, Pharynx, Esophagus, Larynx, Large Bowel, Kidney, Breast, and Ovary.

There is an easy solution to this BBQ dilemma. To avoid the formation of Acrylamides in meats:  Marinade meat before cooking which helps prevent the formation of Acrylamides (use a combination of olive oil, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, and anti-cancer spices like Tumeric and Garlic), and do not char the meat. It is better to cook longer at lower temperatures, away from the direct flame.  If you are not familiar with some of these ingredients, consult your favorite BBQ master. They have all the secrets to a great grill!

Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet) has been linked to breast cancer.  It contains Phenylalanine, Aspartic Acid, and Methanol (which breaks down into formaldehyde in the body) which are all potent Neurotoxins.  The American Cancer Society shows that breast cancer rates have doubled since 1981.  Not so coincidentally, that was the same year Aspartame was approved for use in our food supply.   Due to the Freedom of Information Act, records have now been made public that show that Aspartame caused mammary tumors in rats tested  by G.D. Searle (the makers of Nutrasweet & Equal) from 1971 to 1974, just before the FDA approval. (3)  Dead mice tell no lies.  The newest sweetener, Splenda, does not have any long term studies to prove it’s safety but it is a fact that it goes through an extensive chemical process (mostly involving chlorine, which by the way is a commonly used chemical to sterilize swimming pools). So why wait for the studies?  Stick with natural sweeteners, preferably Stevia, as honey and agave nectar still raise blood sugar.

Pesticides: Pesticides on produce, animal feed, residues in animal products and in our environment are known carcinogens, which can damage breast DNA and can disrupt or mimic normal hormonal activity.  To avoid pesticides, follow the produce buying guide in the Maximized Living Nutrition Plans book and stick with naturally raised, organic animal products. Non-Organic Animal Products: Research shows that milk produced from cows treated with rBGH increase the risk for Breast Cancer and Colon Cancer.  Non-Organic milk you find on the store shelf contains rBGH and other synthetics which are known hormone disruptors. For Example, hormone disruptors can lead to circulating concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1 thus incresing the risk of breast cancer. (5)  Much of the farmed fish on the market (especially Salmon and Sea Bass) contain high levels of PCB’s (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) and dioxins which are classified as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP’s) and are known carcinogens.  Although PCB’s have been banned in the US and many other countries, many residues remain in our water supplies.  Large fish at the top of the food chain pose an even higher health risk due to the fact that these PCB’s bioaccumulate and become highly concentrated. (6)

Soy: This so-called “Health Food” has been identified as a strong cancer promoting food.  According to Dr. Kaayla Daniel, “The truth is that soy protein contains dangerous levels of plant estrogens.  Although not identical to human estrogens, these have been proven to increase breast cell proliferation, a widely accepted marker of breast cancer risk.” (7) Unfermented soy also contains Phytates which inhibit certain enzymes and are Goitrogens (interfere with thyroid function).  NOTE:  Not all soy products are unhealthy.  Fermented soy like Natto, Miso, and Tempeh help boost intestinal flora that helps with digestion and immunity.  For more information, watch our previous webinar with Dr. Daniel here.

PART II – The Nutritional “Defenders”

It is important to not only avoid the foods that compromise the body but to include and increase the very things that keep your body healthy and functioning properly.  This is all to ensure that your body remains PURE.  The foods listed below work to PREVENT cancer.  These are just a few examples of the readily available resources we have to battle against this disease:

Green Tea: Green Tea contains high levels of Catechins which can block the growth of cancers. According to Cancer Research UK, “They prevent DNA damage by mopping up free radicals, blocking the growth of tumor cells and stopping the activation of cancer-causing chemicals.” (8)

Cruciferous Vegetables: Vegetables like Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, and Bok Choy are rich in Glucosinolates which help activate the body’s detoxification system.  This added boost to the antioxidant activity in the body can even last for several days.   In addition, these vegetables help inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Cruciferous vegetables are also very high in fiber content which helps bind to estrogen.  High exposure to estrogen over time is a risk factor for breast cancer.  (also a problem with Soy, see section on items that cause cancer)  Making these vegetables a considerable part of your diet is highly beneficial, not just to prevent breast cancer but for many other health benefits. 

Healthy Fats: The ideal ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 essential fatty acids is 1:1 to 4:1 but unfortunately most Americans have upwards of 18:1 due to high levels of unhealthy Omega 6 fats.  This ideal Omega-6/Omega-3 ratio is highly associated with decreased risk of breast cancer.  Olive Oil, for example contains Phytochemicals and Vitamin E which helps minimize oxidative stress which can lead to cancer.  Healthy fats are essential for healthy cell membranes, to prevent inflammation, and to allow proper messages from the brain and throughout the body to be transmitted properly.   Most people simply do not get enough healthy Omega 3 fatty acids in their diet so supplementation is recommended in the proper ratio.  For more information on Maximized Living Perfect Ratio Omega, click here.

Cacao: This raw form of chocolate is rich in Flavanols (powerful antioxidants) which are  highly absorbable by the body.  Cacao has a phenomenal ORAC score of over 433,000.  CAUTION:  Don’t get too excited and load up on chocolate bars. This is not a free pass at the dessert counter either.   Most chocolate is loaded with other additions like milk products and sugar.  Stick with raw cacao powder – add it to smoothies, yogurt, or mix with avocado and stevia for a mousse-like dessert.

Dark, Leafy Greens: Besides the incredible levels of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, dark, leafy greens like Romaine Lettuce, Kale, Collards, Mustard Greens, Escarole, and Swiss Chard are high in Carotenoids, antioxidants which inhibit the growth of certain types of breast cancer cells. Greens are also high in Phytochemicals which boost enzymes that detoxify carcinogens and help repair DNA damage to cells which can develop into cancer if left unchecked. Dark leafy greens are a nutritional powerhouse that should be a regular part of everyone’s diet.

Organic Animal Products: Wild Caught Fish, Grass Fed Beef , Pasture Raised Poultry and Eggs. Fish has high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids  (see above) and high levels of Vitamin D which is clearly a big player in breast cancer prevention.   Grass fed beef, and organic butter have very high levels of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) which is known to be a powerful cancer fighting agent.   Studies have shown when human breast cancer cells were incubated in high CLA milk fat, the growth of the cancer cells decreased by 90%. (9)  A French study also showed women with the highest CLA levels had a 74% lower risk of developing breast cancer. (10)

Curcumin: This power-packed spice found in Curry Powder and Tumeric contains compounds that protect against breast cancer and tumor growth.  Simply add it to soups, spreads, smoothies, salads, etc.

PART III – Supplementation

Unfortunately, much of what we need to be healthy, and even to prevent breast cancer, simply cannot be attained through our current diets.  While you should never take more than you need, there are some fundamental  essentials that just about everyone needs on a daily basis to stay healthy.

Vitamin D:  Vitamin D is produced in the body from the sun when it interacts with your skin.  Unfortunately, Americans are spending much less time in the sun and when they do, they are loading up on sunscreen.  As a result, most people are alarmingly deficient in Vitamin D.  Recent studies show that ideal serum Vitamin D levels should be at or above 80ng/mL to take advantage of the cancer preventative and overall health benefits of Vitamin D.  A recent study showed that a serum Vitamin D level of 52ng/mL reduces breast cancer risk by 83%. Preventing cancer includes what you eat, you drink, you breathe, what you put on your body, what products you use, what products are in your home, what is in your environment, and how your body is functioning and healing. The following are a few things to consider. Some are not the most obvious to the over-saturated consumer, who has been brainwashed life will stop to exist without certain products or services in our society. But now is the time to educate yourself, because the price of ignorance is too high.

  • Cigarette Smoking: Well, this one is pretty well known. Or should be by now.
  • Mammography: Yes, the very thing used to detect cancer can actually cause cancer.
  • Toxic Personal Care Products: Perfumes, Fragrances, Cosmetics, Lotions, Shampoos, Hair Dyes, Etc.
  • Toxic Cleaning Products: Laundry Detergent, Dishwashing Detergent, Glass Cleaners, Bathroom Cleaners, Dry Cleaning, Etc.
  • Plastic: Bottles, Food Containers, Toys, Etc. YOUR CHILDREN’S TOYS!
  • Pesticides and Herbicides
  • Inactivity: It is extremely important to get oxygen to the cells.
  • Medications and Vaccinations
